FONTAGRO to Fund IDB Studies on Climate Change Impact on Agriculture

FONTAGRO extends agreement with IDB
- The Bank will manage the Fund until 2011 and finance climate change impact studies
The Inter-American Development Bank and the Regional Fund for Agricultural Technology (FONTAGRO, for its initials in Spanish) have extended until 2011 their agreement whereby the IDB will continue to manage the Fund, which finances, on competitive basis, agricultural research and technological development projects focused on strategic regional problems in the Americas.
FONTAGRO is a consortium created and financed by 14 regional countries* and Spain whose aim is to finance technological development in the rural sector through the creation of alliances of public, private, national and international organizations. It has financed 66 projects totaling $9 million and mobilized $12 million in external resources plus $39 million in member states’ counterpart funds, reaching a total of $60 million during its first 10 years.
IDB specialists believe agriculture is one of the sectors that will be most vulnerable to the effects of climate change in the region. Many crops that are crucial for food production are sensitive to temperature and rain pattern changes that can affect both their quality and their yields.
In 2008, the IDB’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative (SECCI) agreed with FONTAGRO to finance three projects on adapting regional productive systems to climate change. These projects will study the vulnerability of crops such as coffee, wheat, corn and potatoes and will be financed with trust fund resources from SECCI’s Multi-donor Fund and from the Japanese and Korean trust funds.
IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno on May 5 met with FONTAGRO President Leopoldo Sánchez and Vice President Arturo Galo, who gave Moreno a plaque in recognition of the IDB’s crucial support during the Fund’s first 10 years.

FONTAGRO extiende acuerdo con el BID
- El Banco administrará el Fondo hasta 2011 y financiará estudios sobre impacto del cambio climático
El Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo y el Fondo Regional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (FONTAGRO) extendieron hasta 2011 el acuerdo por el cual el BID continúa administrando el Fondo que financia, sobre bases competitivas, proyectos de investigación agropecuaria y de desarrollo tecnológico enfocados hacia problemas estratégicos regionales en las Américas.
FONTAGRO es una alianza creada y respaldada por 14 países de la región** y España para financiar el desarrollo tecnológico en el sector rural a través de la formación de consorcios entre organizaciones públicas, privadas, nacionales e internacionales. Ha financiado 66 proyectos por US$9 millones, movilizando US$12 millones en recursos externos y US$39 millones en fondos de contrapartida de los países miembros, alcanzando un total de US$60 millones en sus primeros 10 años.
El BID es consciente de que uno de los sectores de la región más vulnerables a los efectos del cambio climático es el sector agrícola. Muchos cultivos indispensables para la alimentación son sensibles a cambios de temperatura y patrones de lluvia que pueden afectar tanto la calidad como la productividad del cultivo.
En 2008, la Iniciativa de Energía Sostenible y Cambio Climático (SECCI) del BID acordó con FONTAGRO financiar tres proyectos sobre adaptación de los sistemas productivos regionales al cambio climático. Dichos proyectos estudiarán la vulnerabilidad de cultivos tales como el café, el trigo, el maíz y la papa, y serán financiados con recursos fiduciarios del Fondo SECCI Multidonante y fondos fiduciarios de Japón y Corea.
El presidente del BID, Luis Alberto Moreno, recibió el 5 de mayo a Leopoldo Sánchez, presidente de FONTAGRO y a Arturo Galo, vicepresidente del Fondo, quienes hicieron entrega de una placa de reconocimiento al BID por el significativo apoyo recibido durante los primeros 10 años del Fondo.
