From the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES):

BNDES approves R$ 101 million in financing for Bahia PCH I

The directors of the BNDES have approved R$ 101 million in financing for the company Bahia PCH I. The funds will be used to construct a Small Hydroelectric Plant (PCH Sítio Grande), with installed capacity of 25 megawatts (MW), and an associated transmission system. To fulfill the workforce demand during construction, eight hundred direct jobs will be created.

Controlled by group Neoenergia, Bahia PCH I is a Special-purpose Society (SPE). Located in the City of São Desidério (state of Bahia), the plant will receive support from the BNDES corresponding to 74.7% of project’s total amount, which is R$ 1134.8 million.

In order to approve the project, the BNDES has requested that Bahia PCH I implement an Integrated Management System to manage the investments. That is, to take into account work safety, occupational health, environment and quality when carrying out construction works. With regards to environmental management, the System also promotes the collection of data on the status of the riparian forest and investments to reforest the reservoir shores (which may grant carbon credits).

The program also encourages social efforts and investments, particularly those regarding the potential impact that temporary jobs have on the region, the offer of urban and social infrastructure, and the generation of job and income opportunities for the local population.

Generation – From January to March 2009, the directors of the BNDES approved three loans for PCHs, which amounts to a total of R$ 282 million, resulting in a R$ 373.4 million investment and generation capacity of 73 MW. Throughout the last six years, eighty-three PCHs projects have been approved, amounting to R$ 5 billion in loans, adding up to a total investment of R$ 7.3 billion and delivering an installed capacity of 1,700 MW.
