Organic Urban Gardens in Caracas

The BBC has a brief but quite interesting photo essay (tip of the hat to Brent Eubanks for alerting me to this) about an experiment in organic urban gardening underway in Caracas, Venezuela. One of President Hugo Chavez’s “social projects” is a 1.2 acre urban garden in the city center — in the shadow of the Hilton, as a matter of fact. The showcase garden uses only organic inputs, practices vermiculture and sells the produce it grows at a modest booth on-site at prices below those charged in Caracas supermarkets. Classes are held at this “Organoponico Bolivar” to teach students and anyone else interested in organic and urban growing techniques they can replicate at home. Check it out.
