Argentina receives US$200 million in financing for potable water and sanitation program

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$200 million loan to expand potable water and sanitation services in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and suburbs.

This project is part of a wider expansion program which seeks to add 1.5 million users to the water service and 1.4 million to the sewer system between now and 2011.

This is the first loan within a US$720 million conditional credit line for investment projects (CCLIP) approved by the IDB’s Board of Executive Directors.

The expansion of potable water and sanitation services includes the construction of a collector sewer with corresponding pumping stations in the municipality of Tigre, which will enable the system to serve an additional 220,000 residents; and the construction of sewage networks in the municipalities of Tres de Febrero, Hurlingham and Ituazingó, wich will service 108,000 residents.

The project also includes a plant for a plan to reduce unaccounted-for water in order to minimize losses and make the best use of the distribution system, saving nearly 100,000 cubic meters of water daily; and the reconditioning of the San Martín potable water plant, which supplies 4.8 million people.

The loan will be executed by Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos S.A. (AySA).

Argentina recibe US$200 millones de financiamiento para programa de agua potable y saneamiento

El Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) aprobó un préstamo de US$200 millones para ampliar y mejorar los servicios de agua potable y saneamiento en el área metropolitana de Buenos Aires y sus suburbios.

Este programa hace parte de un plan de expansión más amplio, que busca incorporar 1,5 millones de personas al servicio de agua potable y 1,4 millones al servicio de alcantarillado de aquí al 2011.

El préstamo es el primero dentro de una línea de crédito condicional (CCLIP) de hasta US$720 millones aprobada por el Directorio Ejecutivo del BID.

La expansión de los servicios de saneamiento incluye la construcción de un colector en el municipio de Tigre con sus correspondientes estaciones de bombeo, lo cual permitirá incrementar la capacidad del sistema para atender a 220,000 habitantes adicionales; y la construcción de redes de alcantarillado en los municipios Tres de Febrero, Hurlingham e Ituzaingó que atenderán a 108.000 hab.

El proyecto también incluye un plan para la reducción de agua no contabilizada que busca minimizar pérdidas optimizando el sistema de distribución, lo cual permitirá ahorrar diariamente cerca de 100.000 metros cúbicos de agua; y la rehabilitación de redes de agua potable y de la planta de potabilización de San Martín, la cual abastece a una población de 4,8 millones de habitantes.

El préstamo será ejecutado por Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos S.A. (AySA).
